Farmer Fridays - It's beginning to look a lot like fall

Well, it's beginning to look and sound a lot like fall around this pig pen.  Due to lack of rain this summer, our corn has matured faster than normal even though it was an extremely wet spring.  This has caused it to change colors in recent weeks ahead of schedule.

On Monday of this week, I would have thought it was October based on how our corn looked and I could even hear it "rustling."  The temperature outside of almost 90 degrees quickly reminded me that it was only August 30th and I couldn't believe it.  In the 10 years, The Farmer and I have been married, I really don't remember our corn being ready to harvest quite this early.

Due to the recent change of the color of the corn and the fact that the husk is opening up and the ear is pointing downward, we know that our corn is ready to harvest.  Our corn will be ready to harvest early next week.

Although we started the week with the heat of summer, by today's Farmer Fridays it actually feels like a nice fall day which makes it a little easier to fathom that we will start harvest in less than a week.  This means we will be taking advantage of this Labor Day weekend to have one last family cookout before harvest starts.

Hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend with your family and be sure to check out my guest blog post over at the American Farm Bureau Federation's Young Farmers and Ranchers Blog.

  7. Great insight about your corn and upcoming harvest. Thanks for sharing. You are way ahead of us. In North Dakota we need to wait yet to combine our pinto beans, then our soybeans then by mid-October or so corn should be ready. Of course...it all depends on the weather. I read your FB blog post. The name absolutely matters. Say H1N1 and let's all be advocates of that messages. Thanks!
